Okay Students!

Class is now in session for your first lesson… “The History of Denim

The word comes from the name of a sturdy fabric called serge, originally made in Nîmes, France, by the André family. Originally called serge de Nîmes, the name was soon shortened to denim.

The contemporary word “jeans” comes from the French phrase bleu de Gênes, literally the blue of “Genoa”. Jeans fabric, or “Denim”, originated in the French town of Nîmes, from which ‘denim’ (de Nîmes) gets its name where the first denim trousers were made in early 18th century.

Some of the earliest American blue jeans were made by Jacob Davis, Calvin Rogers, and Levi Strauss in 1873.
