Spring is just around the corner. I can feel it. One of my New Year’s Resolutions was to change up my hair and makeup routines. Nothing drastic just taking a little more time. I mean, I am a hairstylist and all. I should have perfect hair all the time. Well, that just doesn’t happen in the real world with kids. I think we should, every once in a while, take a little more time for ourselves. I am not suggesting that we forgo our families, our household duties (sorry, that is the only word I could think of but you know what I mean), and all of our other motherly and womanly jobs to spend hours in the bathroom primping. Just a few extra swipes of mascara or trying a new way to wear your hair are a good way to enter the New Year and feel fresh for spring. When I feel like a look my best I am in a much better mood.
I do take for granted sometimes being a hairstylist that every girl knows how to use a curling iron. With my chosen profession I am obviously into hair but I realize not everyone else is. So I am going to show you a great way to get loose waves. It is really easy, I promise.

1. Start out with clean, completely dry hair. My hair curls better when it is clean but if you are one of the lucky ones that can go days between washing then try it.
2. I section my hair in 3 sections. I first curl the bottom section using a 1 inch curling iron taking about a 1 inch section of hair. The thicker your sectioning the less curl you will have. Start at the base of your hair and curl, then slightly open the iron and curl. Work your way down until you get to your ends. This ensures that the base of your hair has the longest time in the iron. If your hair is my length or longer the ends just weigh down the curl so this will help with that. Hold the iron vertically.
3. You don’t have to make the hair underneath perfect. Just get it curled.
4. Do the same with the middle section.

5. When you get to the top layer you are going to curl it a little different. Take a 1 inch section and wrap the hair around the iron without opening the iron. Start again at the base and wrap it holding the ends as close to the iron as you can. PLEASE DO NOT BURN YOURSELF. Leaving the ends out produces a more natural wave look.
6. Curl the whole top section this way. If you want you can change the direction of the curl every other section. This also makes for a more natural look.
7. When you are done lightly brush through the curls. This sounds weird but it helps to get rid of all the small sections and makes your hair more cohesive.
8. Then spray, spray spray.
9. This was the same day, I just changed my shirt.
10. The products I used on my hair were: Bumble & Bumble Thickening Spray (for volume), Alfaparf Crystals (serum for frizz and heat protectant), L’Oreal Elnett Hairspray (my favorite) and a curling iron.

Tips: If your hair is naturally wavy, I would dry it without trying to straighten it and just curl. If your hair is curly, I would dry it as straight as possible with just a brush (don’t try too hard) and then curl. Don’t worry about frizz because the iron will take care of that. Use some sort of heat protectant whether it is a spray or serum to prevent any damage.
So I will be trying to wear my hair this way at least once a week. It only took me an extra 10-15 minutes. I think I can handle that.
