How to Have an Organized Closet for the New Year!
When you look inside your closet, what goes through your head? Do you like the size of it? Do you feel frustration and chaos or peace and contentment?
If frustration and chaos would be your answer, let me help you feel a little better about going to get dressed and working with your closet no matter what the size.
First thing I always tell my clients is, can you see what is hanging in your closet? If your answer is no, then I have a few ways to fix that.
- Scarfs- they need to be hung and not stuffed in a drawer. You forget to wear them
because you cannot see them. - Jewelry- if it is far away from your closet and you don’t know where most of it is, then I highly recommend taking cork board and hanging your necklaces by your scarfs in your closet. Rings, bracelets and earrings should be also in close proximity. Now, I know it is hard, depending on your closet, to have all in the same area. I have found many different ways to make it work for people even with the smallest closets/spaces.
- Shoes - shoes that are in boxes cannot be seen. It is best to take them out of the
box and put on one or several shoe racks. The other option to best know what shoes are in your closet is to stack in clear containers so you can see them and sort in order of color and season.
As far as clothing goes, items that are smallest, such as tank tops and sleeves shirts need to be hanging so that when you step into your closet, you see that first. Then short to long sleeves next and in color sequence as well. Coats towards the back of the closet because they are the heaviest and bulkiest and will block the other hanging items and when you can’t see those pieces, they tend to never get worn.
When I piece outfits together for clients I take the pictures with their phone so they have access to it whenever needed. An album can also assembled and placed at the front of the closet when you first walk in. Either method lets a client scroll through ensembles each day to find what to wear! Some of these are combinations they originally had not considered matching or piecing together.
So, whatever actions mentioned above for you will be true for your kiddos as well. I have found they can feel equally as frustrated if their closet is in chaos and items are tucked away in drawers not to be seen.
What a GREAT gift and new years blessing to give to yourself! Starting your day off on the right foot is SO important to continuing on that same path throughout your day.
