FITNESS TIPS FOR A NEW YOU IN THE NEW YEAR!

OH, BABY!
From mom-to-be to hot mama, leave your crib for the day  and take a stroll down the path to tighter, stronger and toned all over.  These tips from Director of Equinox Fitness Training Institute Geralyn  Coopersmith will re-define “healthy routine”, and leave you with the body  you’ve always wanted. Time to re-fashion that birthday suit.

MIX IT  UP
Varying your routine with different types of cardio and resistance  training changes the types of stress placed on the body, which reduces your  risk of injury. Also, your body will get used to the same workout over time,  which can lead to frustrating fitness plateaus. Switching it up keeps it  challenging and helps you get better gains. You’ll also avoid the boredom  that comes with doing “the same old, same old”.

REALITY  CHECK
Have realistic expectations for what the fit version of you should  look like. Many women overestimate their body size. In fact, 75% of normal  weight women believe they are actually  overweight.

STRAIGHT UP
Your body is always learning and  taking notes. Keep your posture in mind. Women are more likely than men to  develop a rounded upper back and forward head posture. Stand with poise even  when you are holding the baby. It’s easy to rest on your structure, shifting  your wait to one side and pushing out your belly, but form follows function.  How you move all day long impacts how your body performs and  looks.

CHILD’S PLAY
Finding the  time to work out can be a challenge, especially when you have small  children. Use their natural love of play (and boundless energy) to your  advantage by sneaking in quick mini-workouts with your kids whenever you  can. Challenge them to a race in the park, set up an obstacle course in the  back yard, practice hula hooping or jump rope, or try your hand at the  monkey bars. Anything that moves your whole body and gets you a little  breathy and sweaty has fitness benefits, and a few of these scattered  throughout the day can stack up to provide similar benefits to a formal  30-minute fitness session.

ALL YOU KNEAD IS LOVE
Many  experts believe that if you exercise on a regular basis, massage is no  longer just a feel good luxury – it’s an essential part of your fitness  “recovery and regeneration” program. Soft tissue work keeps muscle tissue  healthy and in peak condition. Massage improves blood flow, breaks up scar  tissue and removes waste helping you avoid injuries and post-workout  soreness.

CLEAN AND GREEN
Unfortunately,  you can’t exercise your way out of a bad diet. Good nutrition is the  cornerstone of looking great and feeling your best. Avoid white flour, sugar  and highly processed foods which are usually low in nutritional value and  high in empty calories. Eat as close to nature as possible, focusing on  whole foods (including: vegetables, fruit, whole grains, lean proteins) and  keep hydrated with plenty of water.
